A Bounty of Marine Life in Biscayne Bay
Miami is surrounded by water and teaming with marine life including resident pods of dolphin, manatee and yes, even crocodiles! Biscayne Bay stretches the length of Miami-Dade County and the only thing separating the bay from the Ocean are the barrier islands of Miami Beach and Key Biscayne.
This sub-tropical bay is the largest estuary in Florid and home to the Biscayne Aquatic Preserve. More than 200 dolphin have been identified by researchers as making their home in Biscayne Bay. The Florida Manatee is a regular site in some quieter areas of the bay as are Tarpon fish, various marine bird species and every once in awhile, you spot a crocodile swimming in the channels. The crocodile habitat within such an urban environment is unusual but they survive well in the mangrove-lined shores of the bay.
We regularly encounter dolphin, manatee and more on our sightseeing experience as we cover more than 40-miles of Biscayne Bay. It’s always fun to get an up-close look at these beautiful marine creatures.
